INTERNSHIPS

World Up seeks dynamic, ambitious interns in New York City and around the World.

We’re looking for a few people who are generally cooperative, amicable, and sharp to help us around the World UP office. Skills a bonus. Each applicant must be a current student enrolled in a degree-granting program at an accredited university. The internship is unpaid; school credit is available. Interns should be able to commit 12 to 20 hours per week, on average. The exact dates of the internship will depend on each student’s availability, but please apply for one of the four terms below.

* Fall Internship: August/September - December; apply by September 1 (extended to September 30)
* Winter Internship: January - March; apply by December 1
* Spring Internship: April - June; apply by March 1
* Summer Internship: May/June - August/September; apply by April 15

Each World UP Intern will be involved with a specific department as well as helping to keep the company running. General operational duties include prepare mailings, run errands, and compile research. The responsibilities within each department are described below.

WORLD UP EDU / Internship

Our education division, World Up EDU, has worked with a variety of academic institutions and organizations like United Nations and the International Rescue Committee. With these organizations, we have been able to reach a variety of students from the US and around the world. With our programs we aim to inspire students to look at global issues through a new lens and to look inside themselves to define their own global perspectives.

HIGH SCHOOL INTERNSHIP

World Up EDU plans to build a massive online presence and we are looking for a dedicated HIGH SCHOOL student intern to help us build an interactive model. With your help, World Up will be able to reach more students from around the world by createing a cross-cultural platform that engages them in global issues through music, art, and media in ways that matter to them.

This unique experience lets students like you learn by working alongside the World Up team. We are looking for someone that has experience with web design, but more importantly has a fresh set of eyes and an interest in international culture, global issues, and above all, music.

Responsibilities:
* Work 5-10 hours a week on the online presence of WORLD UP
* Keep an online journal and record best practices learned in your internship
* Plan and complete a variety of online assessments, surveys, and online projects
* Assist design team and contribute ideas to meetings

Background / Skills:
* Extremely connected to social networking sites (Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, etc.)
* Proficient in any of the following programs: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign
* Skilled in web design and production, including Adobe Dreamweaver and Flash
* Interest or experience with non-profit organizations
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Strong organizational skills
* Creative thinking
* Strong research skills

UNDERGRAD/GRADUATE

EDU: Curriculum Development

Our education division, World Up EDU, has worked with the United Nations and the International Rescue Committee. With these organizations, we have been able to reach a variety of international students. We aim to inspire students to look inside themselves to define their own story, and remain culturally grounded throughout their lives.

World Up is building high school and college curricula that will serve as the main program for World Up EDU.

We are looking for an intern that has a working knowledge of writing curriculum and daily lesson planning for high school and college students. The primary purpose of this position is to assist with developing new hip hop education curricula from audiences ranging from 9th grade to the senior level in college. Working directly with the Education Director and World Up staff, the internship provides a unique opportunity for students to be involved with developing a unique programming model for international hip hop education.

This position calls for an energetic and innovative thinker with excellent research, lesson planning, curriculum development, writing, proofreading, and editing skills. Knowledge or passion of hip hop as a tool for education is a huge plus, but not required.

Responsibilities:
* Assist in developing new education lessons and activities for multiple age groups
* Research best practice models and provide recommendation for enhancing current education materials
* Research different grant opportunities for the World Up EDU program
* Research all of the international high schools and related college programs in the New York area
* Assist curriculum staff with proofreading, editing, design, and layout of curriculum materials

Background / Skills:
* Undergraduate or Graduate students interested in curriculum development, education, lesson planning, writing, and editing;
* Computer proficiency in MS office application;
* flexible, detail-oriented,
* Self-directed and eager to participate in a new venture
* Strong organizational skills
* Proven ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple projects concurrently
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Interactive / Digital Technologies Internship

Responsibilities:
* Hands-on development of dynamic modules and pages on the web site
* Front End Development  (HTML, CSS, JS) or back-end (PHP, scripts, database)
* Examine and document 3rd party APIs and solutions for use in the WORLD UP web site (i.e. DIGG, Facebook Connect)
* Assist in setting up and maintaining web server and database infrastructure
* Conduct QA tasks
* Maintain technical documents
* Assist in day-to-day maintenance of the site
* Perform adhoc database queries and maintenance
* Daily analytics metrics reporting utilizing Google Analytics
* Come up with innovative approaches to raise site awareness, based on analytics / metrics findings

Background / Skills:
* Computer Science or MIS majors and minors preferred
* Experience in WORDPRESS a must (Or a blog atmosphere)
* Experience in web development (Dream Weaver / Visual Studio)
* Ability to communicate effectively with both business and technical stakeholders
* Strong interest in open source technologies, web technologies, online media and distribution
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Strong organizational skills
* Strong research skills
* Creative thinking
* Current ties in multiple social networks
* Experience with social networking a must
* Bloggers preferred
* Energetic and ready to roll

EDITORIAL

Responsibilities:
* Assisting in reading, filtering, and responding to submissions as well as other emails and letters
* Moderating comments on the WORLD UP website
* Basic administrative duties – phones, mailings, errands
* Filing, scanning, organizing important contracts and accounting documents
* Editorial research, copy editing and fact checking for print and web
* Finding places to promote/send W pieces online
* Uploading WORLD UP content to the site

Background / Skills:
* Interest in current events, print and online media
* Strong writing & copyediting skills
* Photoshop and HTML experience
* Blogging & CMS background useful
* FinalCutPro versed a plus

SOCIAL MEDIA and MARKETING INTERNSHIP

Responsibilities:
* Update WORLD UP’s various online profiles - Twitter/Facebook/Youtube/Vimeo, grow fans/friends/followers by RT, dialogue and spreading our mission
* Assist in blog outreach
* Staffing events
* Research new online social media best practices and trends such as bre.ad, twitter, etc.

Background / Skills:
* Interest or background in marketing / online marketing
* Experience with social media
* Word & excel savvy
* Relationships with bloggers preferred

GRAPHIC DESIGN

Responsibilities:
* Assist in the conception and execution of projects across several mediums including, but not limited to: print, web, video, and environmental
* Assist with posters, invites, banners, illustrations, and window displays
* Phones, mailings, errands
* Designing for company projects including the monthly internal newsletter

Background / Skills:
* Strong design and typography skills
* Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign
* HTML experience a plus
* Preferred majors: Graphic Design and Illustration
* Prior design and publishing experience is helpful but not required
* Interest in editorial design, current events, print and online media

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Responsibilities:
* Research local partnership opportunities including business, universities, and non-profits
* Promote events online and offline
* Organize community participation, community outreach and related tasks
* Assist with setup and breakdown of events
* Encourage newsletter registration; engage with event guests about WORLD UP
* Research and implement sustainable practices

Background / Skills:
* Self-directed
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Creative and hands-on
* Knowledgeable about the greater New York area
* Proven ability to meet deadlines and juggle multiple projects in a fast paced environment.
* Marketing or community organizing experience a plus
